This is his second stint with the Trump Administration.
FAIRFIELD, CT — David L. Fogel, a 20-plus-year resident of Fairfield, was confirmed by the United States Senate this week to his second stint in the administration of President Donald Trump.
Fogel was confirmed as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the United States and Foreign Commercial Service, which is in the federal Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration. He will be officially sworn into the role in the near future.
“The Global Markets division of the Commerce Department includes approximately 1,200 employees around the world and is responsible for expanding market access in foreign countries for U.S. goods and services, promoting U.S. exports abroad, and facilitating foreign direct investment into the U.S.,” Fogel said in an email to Patch.
In his new role, Fogel will lead the Global Markets business unit, which is dedicated to commercial diplomacy, commercial advocacy, export promotion, and foreign direct investment.
Fogel was part of President Trump’s first term, during which Fogel served as Senior Advisor and Chief Business Development Officer in the Office of the Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment at the U.S. Department of State. He was also Chief of Staff at the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
Trump nominated him for the position of Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs.
“But my nomination expired before it was acted on by the Senate,” Fogel said.
Fogel started his career as a corporate attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, but he left there after a couple of years and founded three startups that he successfully sold to larger entities.
In 2000, Fogel sold SmartPortfolio.com, an early Internet company he launched, to TheStreet.com.
He then launched an exchange-traded fund company, called IndexIQ, which he sold in 2014 to New York Life Insurance Co.
After that, Fogel founded a crypto mining company, called Coinmint LLC, which he sold in 2024 to NYDIG LLC.
Fogel’s earned a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service; a JD (magna cum laude) from Georgetown Law Center; and an MBA from the Georgetown McDonough School of Business.
He has also served as an Adjunct Professor in Entrepreneurship at the Georgetown University Law Center and on the Advisory Board of the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown.
