Members of the Mysore Bar Association staged a demonstration in the city on Wednesday condemning the attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai by a lawyer at the Supreme Court on Monday.
The association members assembled in front of the Gandhi’s bust opposite the Mysuru civil court complex and condemned the incident. Senior members of the bar said that the attack was not only reprehensible but an assault on the Constitution of India. They stated that India was a nation state because of the Constitution and attempts to weaken the Constitution would amount to weakening the country.
The bar association sought action against the accused Rakesh Kishore, and boycotted the court proceedings. A memorandum was also submitted to the government urging the authorities to initiate action against the accused. The bar members said there will be protests in case any member of the legal fraternity tried to defend the accused. “As lawyers, we are duty bound to protect and uphold the ideals of the Constitution and hence we express our solidarity with Mr. Gavai’’, said the bar members.
Members and activists of various organisations also staged a demonstration condemning the attack on the CJI and said the accused should be prosecuted and banned from practicing in future. The activists said it was an insult to the Constitution and the democracy, and sought stringent punishment to the accused. The activists also urged the government to identify others who may have conspired, and attributed the incident to a “rise in communal politics” in the country.
