Pink Toilet sanitation complex becomes unfit for use

A complex of restrooms, water dispenser and a ‘digital health centre’ for emergency medical treatment launched by Tiruchi Corporation exclusively for women users and persons with disabilities in 2019 near Chathiram bus stand has fallen into disrepair.

The sanitation complex, built at an estimated cost of over ₹30 lakh, was meant to function as a free facility under the Pink Toilet scheme. Today, it presents a picture of neglect, with trash cans and garbage from nearby areas landing up on the premises.

The sole toilet that is still open is barely functional. “There is no water supply, and very little maintenance in this toilet. It is disappointing to see public facilities for women and disabled persons getting such poor attention from the authorities,” a female visitor said.

The busy area attracts a significant number of travellers and floating crowds to the shops and educational institutions in the vicinity. The sanitation complex could be very useful for women and physically challenged users, said civic activists.

When contacted, a senior Corporation official told The Hindu that the issue had been taken note of. “We will take action to make the complex functional as soon as possible,” the official said.
