A school has been placed in an emergency lockdown after at least one student was seriously injured in a stabbing. Police have confirmed a suspect is in custody after the incident at Paderborn school in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany today.
A female student was reportedly stabbed by a man in the school’s gym shortly after 1pm before “the attacker then fled the scene in an unknown direction,” Paderborn police said. The pupil is fighting for her life and currently undergoing emergency surgery for her injuries.
A male was arrested at around 2pm in the Padersee area of the city and was found with a “stabbing tool”, according to local reports. A the “special forces” are understood to be at the scene with police searching the grounds and buildings of the further education facility.
It is unclear if any other individuals were injured at this time. Paderborn offers stepping stone qualifications which help students enter universities. Around 350 pupils and 40 teachers attend the school.
A police spokesperson confirmed: “According to current information, a student was critically injured with a knife. A prime suspect has been arrested.”
