Two Claire's Accessories stores near Glasgow to close as 145 branches shut across the UK

Two Claire’s Accessories near Glasgow are set to close after the struggling firm was recently saved from immediate collapse.

Back in September, joint administrators at Interpath had sold “substantially most” of the high street stores to Modella Capital in a rescue deal that saved 156 stores and thousands of jobs.

However, 145 stores were not included in the deal and they are expected to close permanently, with a total of 14 affected by the move.

The Express has since confirmed the full list of locations that were not picked up by Modella Capital, with exact closure dates varying by locations. Included in the list are one store in East Kilbride and another in Clydebank.

It has been reported that the affected stores have already begun to launch closing down sales over the weekend, with shoppers able to make the most of 20 per cent off all stock.

According to Interpath Advisory, every option to find a buyer for the remaining sites had been explored, but the firm was left with no alternative but closure.

Will Wright, UK chief executive at Interpath, said: “Our intention is to continue to trade the remaining portfolio of stores for as long as possible, while we explore the options available.”

Claire’s Accessories was first founded in America, but has been a UK high street staple following the opening of its first store in 1996, quickly becoming a hit with teenagers across the country.

However, the UK-arm of the accessories chain fell into administration in July, as it faced a looming deadline worth $480million (£355million) that was due to be repaid in December 2026.

The move came just days after its US parent company filed for bankruptcy on August 7, with the American side of the business since being sold to a new owner, securing 950 stores in the country.

Meanwhile, Modella struck up a deal directly with US owner Ames Watson to help keep the 156 UK stores open, but there could still be the potential for more closures and job losses in the future.

Staff have been told decisions will be made “as quickly as possible”, as the investment group negotiates with landlords over rent and lease agreements as uncertainty remains for the saved sites.

Just before the retailer was saved by Modella, the Claire’s Accessories website was initially closed down, with shoppers reportedly being unable to seek refunds on orders made prior to its collapse.

As of now, the website it back open, but a statement confirms that the firm has “paused” online shopping while it closes down parts of the business.

Modella Capital boss Joe Price said: “As a firm, we strongly believe that this much-loved brand deserves the chance to remain on the high street in the UK and Ireland.

“The issues that Claire’s is facing are significant, and we will need to work collaboratively with all interested parties if our proposed rescue plan is to succeed.”
