STILLWATER — Oklahoma State will spend this week preparing two new quarterbacks for Saturday’s game against Houston.
The Cowboys have already used four different quarterbacks in five games this season after being hit with the injury bug.
With Hauss Hejny (Jones fracture) and Zane Flores (upper body injury) likely out for the upcoming game, OSU interim coach Doug Meacham is expected to get wide receiver Sam Jackson (a former QB at Cal and TCU) and true freshman Banks Bowen repetitions at practice.
What’s the short-term goal for Houston’s game?
“It’s about being simple and just know where your eyes should be, know where your checks are and know how to communicate and the signals and just the normal stuff you teach any quarterback,” Meacham said. “I don’t think there’s anything special … you can create anxiety or you just treat his business as usual. You can have paralysis through analysis. And so we’re just trying to treat you like it’s a three-foot putt and go knock it in. Let’s go.”
Bowen played 10 fourth-quarter snaps in last Saturday’s Arizona loss. Sam Jackson, who began the season as a wide receiver, had seven specific plays for him at quarterback.
Both will have expanded roles this week, along with late quarterback arrival Noah Walters. The former North Alabama QB was just a UCF student before moving to Stillwater on Sept. 18.
Could Walters be ready?
“He could (help) on down the road. He’s a guy who has been here a few weeks. It’s kind of hard to think that you want to throw him out there,” Meacham said. “Banks has been here a while. He’s got a lot of reps and we feel confident and that he understands what we want, in the game plan and stuff like that.”
Houston cautious of trick plays
Houston’s Willie Fritz has been a football coach for 43 seasons. He understands that no opponent can be taken for granted.
That’s why he’s making sure that his team doesn’t overlook the Cowboys entering Saturday’s Big 12.
“They are talented, without question,” Fritz said during a Tuesday news conference. They’ve got a couple new guys, well (interim) head coach was also the offensive coordinator, so there hasn’t been that much change. But I’ve seen him really run a lot of stuff. He’s throwing everything out there at you. So you have to be ready for everything.”
Fritz was impressed with interim defensive coordinator Clint Bowen as well.
“New guy that I’m sure is working through some things as well. But they didn’t give up a few big plays last week. They’re in the game,” Fritz said.
“So we’re gonna have to play extremely well. We know that. Every week I’ve told our guys we’re not gonna be able to roll the ball out there and have great success. We have to play our A game and we’re gonna need to that Saturday.”
OSU gains post-Gundy commit
Oklahoma State received the first commitment of the post-Mike Gundy era on Monday night.
Maliek Bracy, a cornerback from Argyle (Texas) High School, announced his pledge via social media.
Argyle (6-1, 190) took an official visit to Stillwater for the OSU-Tulsa game on Sept. 19.
He is the eighth member of OSU’s 2026 recruiting class.
According to On3, Argyle had offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, Michigan State and Cal. He also took official visits to Memphis and Houston.
He originally committed to Memphis over the summer before choosing to reopen the recruiting process.
In his junior season, Bracy finished with 44 tackles and five interceptions.
On the call
Oklahoma State will have the same TNT broadcast crew for Saturday’s 11 a.m. game against the Cougars.
J.B. Long will handle play-by-play duties with Mike Golic Jr. providing analysis.
The game will be simulcast on truTV and HBO Max.
