Finding a path beyond fear and revenge

Wise thoughts need to be enactedAustralian-Israeli writer Ittay Flescher (8/10) should be co-opted to be part of the peace committee leading the way for organising resettlement of Gazan, Palestinian and Israeli people. How wisely and with reason he thinks and writes.Julie Broomhall, Timboon

Nurture the seeds of hopeIttay Flescher brought a voice of hope to the op-ed pages (8/10). With credentials as a peace educator in Jerusalem, he explains that building peace means more than a ceasefire or a treaty: “⁣It means Israelis and Palestinians choosing new leaders who will reject the politics of fear and revenge.”⁣Flescher and New Israel Fund with whom he recently collaborated in Australia are welcome voices getting some traction in mainstream media, encouraging us all to nurture the seeds of hope in our hearts. We must follow good leadership towards better politics.Russell Crellin, Greensborough

Compensate Palestinians with money and landAt last, here is a chance of lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The US, instead of giving armaments to Israel to ensure peace, should financially compensate Palestinians for having to give up some of their land to the Israelis in 1948.Gaza is a wreck. What country can thrive with two sections divided by another country? Israelis should leave the West Bank. The West Bank should be enlarged by land equalling the size of Gaza. Shouldn’t the US and Israel financially compensate Gazans for leaving Gaza and moving to the West Bank? Donald Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize, so here is an opportunity for him to earn it.Marguerite Marshall, Eltham

Hamas has a long tailSurveys have suggested that up to two-thirds of the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip still supports the internationally proscribed Islamic terrorist group Hamas. If so, what hope an enduring peace in the area? Even if Hamas is technically frozen out of the process, it will almost certainly emerge in another form.Michael Gamble, Belmont
