Shane Lowry is one of two Irish players that will be teeing it up for Team Europe at the Ryder Cup this week.
Lowry has excelled in his two Ryder Cup appearances to date, helping them to beat USA in Rome in 2023, and was one of the few bright spots during the Whistling Straits annihilation of 2021
Although he hasn’t had the best season by his own illustrious standards, with a solo win still evading him since his 2022 triumph at Wentworth, Lowry is the ultimate team player and has excelled in team events in the past, winning alongside his great pal Rory McIlroy on the PGA Tour in 2024.
All of Ireland will be cheering for Lowry this week, as will his wife Wendy and two daughters Iris and Ivy.
Offaly natives Wendy and Shane have been together since 2012. They got married in New York City four years later, and have since had two daughters, Iris (8) and Ivy (4).
Unlike many other celebrity weddings, Shane and Wendy tied the knot in a very low-key affair: “The guest list [was spiralling] and I get stressed very easily, so we decided the big white wedding at home was not what we wanted,” Lowry said
“Anyone who knows Wendy knows that she doesn’t like the limelight or anything like that… It was really all very chilled.”
Iris, Ivy and Wendy are undoubtedly Shane’s biggest fans and have been by his side throughout the highs and lows of the last few years of his career.
Iris caddied for her father at The Masters Par 3 contest earlier this year, and was as happy as anyone when her friend Poppy McIlroy drained a monster putt that both Shane and Rory would have been proud of.
The eldest of Lowry’s children has seen her Dad win some of the biggest tournaments in the world, and after his victory at the HSBC Championship in 2019, he spoke about how happy he was to have won in front of his daughter.
“I’ll be honest, as soon as we had Iris, that’s what I’d dreamed about,” Lowry said
“To have both Wendy and Iris in Abu Dhabi as I won was just dream stuff, something I wouldn’t really let myself think about until it actually happened because you’d only get emotional thinking about it.”
And while little Ivy wasn’t born when Lowry won his major championship, she has seen her dad win at Wentworth in 2022 and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside McIlroy last year, so they both certainly seem to be a good luck charm!
