Design a school and home based training programme to identify red flags on domestic violence

Dear Editor,

The abuse and killing of our women especially by their partners remains a frightening and critical issue facing our nation. We all know that this phenomenon is not new but the other problem is how are those in charge, and Guyanese as a whole, going to aid in making an input to address and fix this problem. The unfortunate killing of our women has been a constant act. Guyana is a small country. Her numerical statistics is less than a million people and over the years we have lost hundreds of our mothers, sisters, aunties, daughters and friends to domestic violence.

Editor, this is sad but what is even sadder is that our women and girls and our men are not getting the help they need to deal with issues that more than often leads to domestic violence. Our people need to be educated about abuse and violence. We need to start educating people how to address those issues relating to anger before it leads to violence and this sort of education needs to start within the home and also in our schools. I am suggesting that the government role out a plan which is going to facilitate the training of persons to deal holistically with domestic violence. This training should further target homes and schools. Some may say visiting homes and the schools may be too extreme but unless the ones in authority know who is suffering and who needs help even though those information about domestic abuse are sensitive this crazy trend will continue to happen. It is scary.

Editor, seriously this pattern of domestic violence is continuing at a level which is frightening. Where are we going with this sort of violence? This must be condemned. This is unacceptable. Our nation is suffering. Our children and families are in pain. We cannot sit back and continue to open the newspaper and read about another woman being brutally murdered by her spouse. Or someone decides one day to disfigure someone else’s daughter or mother or even friend. I am appealing to those in authority to strategize a working plan and do it right now. Our women and daughters are depending on you.
