THE Ministry of Environment and Tourism has officially opened a new regional office in Swakopmund, Erongo Region.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Environment, Indileni Daniel, reflected on the long road to the building’s completion, citing multiple delays caused by construction issues, financial constraints, and contractual disputes.

“Despite facing numerous challenges, including construction defects, financial constraints, payment delays, and contractual disputes, our resolve remained steadfast. Following the termination of the initial contractor in August 2018, when the project stood at 78% completion, the Ministry embarked on a complex journey involving legal procedures and procurement delays. Yet, through perseverance and dedication, a new contractor was appointed in May 2023, and the project reached completion on 5 December 2024,” Daniel said.

The Minister revealed that the initial contract was valued at approximately N$19.2 million, of which N$11.7 million had been spent prior to the termination of the first contractor. The remaining work was finalised by the succeeding contractor at a cost of N$8.3 million.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this success. The National Planning Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the Department of Works have demonstrated the Government of the Republic of Namibia’s capacity to source, finance, and manage infrastructure projects of this scale. This office stands as a testament to our commitment to service delivery, in alignment with Article 95 (Promotion of the Welfare of the People) and Article 100 (Sovereign Ownership of Natural Resources) of the Namibian Constitution,” Daniel added.
