How Lalit Laungani and Spearmark Company Limited Have Driven the Global Watch Industry from Behind the Scenes
In the watch industry, brand names often take center stage. Yet for decades, one Hong Kong–based manufacturer has been the creative force behind many well-known watch brands. Instead of seeking names on a dial or honing its logo, Spearmark Company Limited has rather built its reputation behind the scenes, creating and assembling timepieces for a range of watch brands that value craftsmanship and trust.
At the heart of this business is Lalit Laungani, founder and managing director, whose passion for watchmaking has guided Spearmark’s growth for more than three decades. “I started on the sales side,” he reflects. “But I fell in love with the technicalities of the watches, the mechanics, the design engineering, how everything works together. That’s what really drew me in.”
That fascination later evolved into a career, during which Laungani turned Spearmark into a trusted partner for both established and emerging brands around the world. Today, Spearmark designs and manufactures watches for a wide range of clients: microbrands with bold ideas and international names seeking timeless craftsmanship.
“I’ve always believed in making something that brings value,” Laungani explains. “If we produce a watch that my customer is able to sell for a much higher value, which is also accepted and appreciated by the end user, I can proudly say that we have created true value for the brand.”
It’s this philosophy, rooted in integrity, quality, and collaboration, that runs deep within the company’s culture. Spearmark’s journey has never relied on aggressive marketing or trade exhibitions. “We’ve never exhibited anywhere,” Laungani says. “Every client we’ve gained has come through word of mouth or introductions from existing customers. That’s how we’ve survived and grown. Building relationships has been key.”
And that approach has been impactful. Spearmark is one of the few companies in Hong Kong that maintains its own assembly line, a decision that reflects Laungani’s commitment to precision. While components are sourced through longstanding collaborations with partner factories, Laungani notes that the assembly and final inspection happen under Spearmark’s direct supervision in Hong Kong. “Of course, we collaborate with partners for components,” Laungani explains. “But all quality control happens in Hong Kong. It’s more cost-intensive, but it ensures every watch that leaves us is perfect.”
Even for Swiss-made watches, Spearmark ensures all quality control is completed before shipment. “It surprises people sometimes, why a Swiss watch has its final inspection in Hong Kong,” Laungani shares. “But we do that because we want to be sure what we deliver is flawless.”
Spearmark’s careful process is always blended with its creative, problem-solving mindset. Laungani often works closely with clients to refine ideas that push traditional design boundaries. One such project involved incorporating heritage materials into watch components, transforming unconventional elements into refined, wearable pieces. “It wasn’t easy,” he recalls. “But that’s what I love about this work, solving challenges, experimenting, and creating something meaningful.”
Laungani insists that collaboration to craft exclusive designs is key to Spearmark’s growth. Each project is treated as a creative partnership, blending technical expertise with a deep respect for the client’s vision. “I’m not a designer by training, but I brainstorm with the designers, give inputs, and we solve technical problems together,” Laungani says. “For me, it’s always been about creating something artistic or something that has some technicality in that.”
That collaborative spirit also enables Spearmark to position itself as a partner for emerging watch brands seeking dependable craftsmanship and guidance. Laungani takes pride in supporting microbrands in particular, helping them understand the intricacies of production. “We educate our customers,” he says. “We explain why certain changes are needed, how movements work, and what makes a watch truly functional, reliable, and sellable. As we create a product as per the client’s requirement, we also help them understand the ins and outs of efficient watchmaking. That’s what helps one appreciate a timepiece more.”
While countless timepieces across the global stores carry Spearmark work, the company is now strengthening its foothold in European, Indian, and Middle Eastern markets, continuing to serve customers who value technical precision and design integrity.
“I just want to serve people who love what they do,” he says. “That’s how I see the future for Spearmark, growing with people who share our passion for quality.”
