The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday ordered notice to Paramakudi Municipality in Ramanathapuram district to a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to authorities to ensure that safety measures were in place at the market.
A Division Bench of Justices Anita Sumanth and C. Kumarappan was hearing the petition filed by M. Manikandan of Paramakudi. The petitioner said construction work for the commercial complex was being carried out without any proper inspection.
He said no-objection certificates had not been obtained from the Fire Department, the Health Department and the Town Planning Officer of Paramakudi Municipality. The safety measures were not in place and there were no emergency exits, he said.
He said it is necessary that the commercial complex is constructed under proper permission and supervision. He sought a direction to the authorities to inspect the building and ensure that all safety measures were in place in the commercial complex. The court adjourned the hearing till October 16.
