EXCLUSIVE: Emmy Award-nominated actress and producer Ashley Judd has signed on to star as Mari Cox in 21 Down, which is inspired by the true story of Caden Cox who made history by becoming the first person with Down syndrome to play and score in a college football game. Judd also serves as an executive producer on the film.
21 Down is not just a sports drama, at its heart it is a deeply moving story about family, perseverance, and the fight for inclusion. The unwavering determination of Caden’s parents allowed their son, against all odds, to achieve his dream. Sean McNamara will direct.
The screenplay is written by Jay Paul Deratany and Academy Award-winning writer Ron Bass. Bass collaborates again with Soni Kifferstein, his co-writer on the upcoming Bau: Artist at War. Deratany is a successful lawyer, screenwriter, and playwright whose credits include Foster Boy and the stage musical The Civility of Albert Cashier.
Andrew Sugerman, who has a long and diverse range of critically lauded movies including Shopgirl, Premonition, and Conviction, produces through his company Pantheon Entertainment. Deratany also serves as a producer through his shingle Reel Red Films. Melissa Bickerton and Thom Lipari join the team as executive producers.
