Electric ferry sets November run

The country’s first battery-electric ferry will begin operation next month along the Pasig River, aiming to help ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila. It will serve key cities such as Pasig, Makati, Mandaluyong, Taguig, and Manila.

The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, and the University of the Philippines-Diliman, in partnership with the Maritime Industry Authority, formally launched the Electric Passenger Ferry for Inland Waterways, or E-Ferry, last Monday, October 6.

The modern e-ferry, named M/B Dalaray, means “flow” or “circuit.” According to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., this initiative supports the Philippines’ goal of reducing the use of fossil fuels in vehicles and lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

In a statement, the Maritime Industry Authority Administrator, Sonia Malaluan, expressed full support for the launch of this modern water transport system, noting that it will help alleviate traffic congestion and provide passengers with a more comfortable means of travel to their destinations.

MARINA encouraged the public to ride and use the e-ferry as part of their daily transportation, which set its first voyage expected to begin this November.

The e-ferry can carry 40 passengers and three crew members and operate for 2–3 hours.

This project aims to promote a cleaner, more modern, and future-ready transportation system in the Philippines, boost the economy by utilizing inland waterways, and enhance tourism in the country.

Officials say this marks a significant step toward environmental protection, aiming to promote an eco-friendly mode of transportation while maintaining clean waterways. Additionally, the e-ferry is expected to serve as an effective alternative means of transportation, helping to ease traffic congestion and further protect the river.
