WWE Superstar Becomes Free Agent

WWE star Santos Escobar is now officially a free agent. His contract with the company expired at midnight on Tuesday, October 7.

A new report from Fightful Select confirmed the news, after the outlet had reported on Monday that Escobar was likely to part ways with WWE. Attempts by the company to re-sign him were reportedly declined.

According to sources who spoke with the outlet, Escobar’s decision to leave was based on “creative dissatisfaction than it was about money.” The report added that he was offered an increased salary but still chose not to re-sign with the promotion. WWE.com also moved him to the alumni section, confirming his departure.

Escobar has not competed in a WWE ring since a pair of trios matches at WWE SuperShow live events in Mexico in late July. He has wrestled just seven times in total this year, with two of those appearances coming in battle royals. This lack of television time is believed to be a key factor in his decision.

Formerly known as El Hijo del Fantasma, Escobar signed with WWE in 2019 and debuted on the NXT brand in 2020. He won the NXT Cruiserweight Championship that same year and formed the popular faction Legado del Fantasma.

He was called up to the main roster with his group in October 2022, eventually joining the LWO before splitting from them to align with Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo. In recent weeks, he has hinted at his departure on social media, posting photos with an hourglass emoji.

Escobar has yet to publicly comment on his WWE departure as of this writing. He is free and clear to sign with any promotion he wants.
