Walmart plans to demolish famed Pa. mall it bought

When Walmart purchased the Monroeville Mall in Allegheny County back in February of this year, it wasn’t immediately clear what they planned to do with the 186-acre property.
Now thanks to a grant application, we have a better idea.
According to an application Walmart filed for the 2025 round of the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, the company is looking to demolish the aged mall and replace it with both retail and public space.
Walmart owns the main building, the adjacent strip mall, the expansion near the front entrance, and the land parcels for the Best Buy and Firestone stores.
The retailer filed the application through its limited-liability corporation South Saturn Ridge LLC. It is asking for $7.5 million in state grant funding.
According to the project description, the company hopes to demolish all the existing structures and redevelop the property to include a “new retail, restaurant, and entertainment space, supported by new landscaping, pedestrian-friendly design and public open spaces for community use.”
The site preparation will include grading, stabilization, and modernizing the water, sewer, electric, and telecommunication utilities, the application said.
Walmart purchased the mall from CBL Properties earlier this year for about $34 million.
The Monroeville Mall is where the classic 1978 George Romero zombie film, “Dawn of the Dead,“ was filmed. It opened in 1969.
