As Jo Malone London announces 23 year old British-Ghanaian actress India Amarteifio, star of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, as the global ambassador of its new scent layering campaign, we caught up with her in at Selfridges Corner Shop…
To me beauty is more than skin deep. It is an amalgamation of every positive part in a person. While this radiates through your exterior, I think it ultimately has to start from within.
My beauty icon is my mother. She’s always been incredibly glamorous, so much so that we joke she is a glam-ma and not a grandma, to my nephew. Her attention to detail in how she conducts herself, and also how she presents herself to the world is admirable… She wants to give back. She’s very caring. very nurturing and I think that comes through in her beautiful looks.
I feel my best and most beautiful … After 8 or 9 hours sleep!
I think smells and scents are incredibly important. One that will always remind me of my childhood is Jo Malone London’s Pomegranate Noir (from £56 for 30ml, jomalone.co.uk). It was my mum’s scent. I often used to take it and use it without her knowing because I loved it so much. It remains one of my favourites today!
My beauty routine is low key, but I am high maintenance when it comes to health and wellness. When I am eating right, sleeping right, going to the gym, looking after myself, all of that, I just feel better. And I can see it in my body, in my skin, my hair… It means that I have to do less beauty-wise! If I’m — you know — coming off a really long shoot, or it’s been a long week, it shows on my skin and hair.
The items in my bathroom cabinet that I couldn’t be without? It would have to be Omega 3 and Vitamin D supplements, my beloved Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir, my Revitalash, (£69, cultbeauty.co.uk) which is key for my eyelashes, and some kind of clear lip balm or gloss.
Career wise, my proudest moment is getting to play Queen Charlotte for Netflix. I had just turned 20 when that kicked off, and I went through five months of audition prep. I really put in the hard work to get the reward. It was incredibly satisfying. So yeah…. How it came out, and how it affects people to this day is more than I could have ever wanted.
I don’t think I’m at liberty to say what I am working on at the moment … But I am currently filming, and I’m very excited for the project to be out in the world at some stage. Dot dot dot!
A beauty trend that I love? Acrylic nails! I could never pull them off, but I love a long, red nail. I think they’re beautiful.
I love AIRE Ancient Baths in London. They offer Roman [style] Baths with massages and heated pools. Phones are banned, which forces everyone to switch off and to be present in the moment and in their body. (beaire.com) And in terms of my facials…the only person I will trust is my dermatologist, Doctor Chikami at the Adonia Clinic (adoniamedicalclinic.co.uk). I highly recommend her for black and brown skin.
In terms of things the beauty industry needs to do better I’m consistently trying to strive and push forward sustainability in fashion and beauty. There are definitely ways that we can help, even small efforts like re-filling bottles or recycling, to be less wasteful.
And my happy please? That’s easy! It’s at home, on the sofa. With my tea in hand! If I need headspace I tend to go for a long walk, normally by myself. I like to walk out my energy and normally, by the time I’ve done a big circle around my house, or gone to the woods, I feel a lot more grounded and re-centered.
