Nine Black Isle youngsters feeling ‘proud as punch’ after awards haul

NINE Black Isle young people have had their efforts recognised at an awards ceremony, which left them feeling “proud as punch”.

Young volunteers at Black Isle Youth Development scooped multiple accolades at the Highlands Third Sector Interface (HTSI) Awards.

Wanda Mackay, chairperson of Cromarty Youth Cafe, said: “Super proud and delighted to have nine of our young people scoop up awards with The Highland Third Sector Interface for the Black Isle.

“The event was amazing as always so much work and energy goes in to the evening. The impact the work of volunteers has on our communities was apparent for all to see and hear. The outstanding dedication and passion from all nine of our recipients was reflected on, and they were thankful for it. Feeling proud as punch!”

Black Isle winners of the Summit Awards were:

• Daniel Frain from North Kessock

• Katie O’Hagan from Cromarty, who has gained 545 volunteering hours

• Sports ambassador, Kelsey Benjamin

• Kyle Mackay, who has been volunteering since age 5.

• Nomqhele Bliss Gumbo, who supports the Black Isle intergenerational cafe

• Imogen Macdonald, who is working towards her gold Duke of Edinburgh award

• Cailyn Philip and Taylor Macdonald, who both support several local groups

The final Black Isle award-winner was Orlagh MacIver, who scooped the title of Youth Volunteer of the Year — the highest honour at the HTSI Awards.

Wanda said: “Orlagh always has her community at heart, volunteering for several local organisations including the Cromarty Youth Café. She is a kind and dedicated person and someone both young and old look up to. Orlagh has done a power of work around promoting positive mental health and is a great ambassador for Intergenerational work and supporting our oldies to grow older happier and better together doing lots of fun activities.

“Orlagh has now clocked up 1284 hours in her Saltire Award and over 1250 hours in her HLH leadership journey.”
