— * reflects forfeited game
Comments: Creighton Prep turned away Omaha Central to win the most competitive game involving a ranked Class A team last week. The weekly blowouts were in full force, with six ranked teams winning by at least 50 points. That doesn’t help the clamoring for change in the state’s top classification. Lincoln East’s clunker at Millard North leaves Lincoln without a ranked team this week. It’s not often a 2-4 team makes the rankings, but Millard North’s four losses came to strong teams, and an impressive win by four touchdowns against East gives the Mustangs the nod.
CLASS B School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Elkhorn North (6-0) 1 Elkhorn, W, 51-7
2. Norris (6-0) 2 L. Standing Bear, W, 42-0
3. Waverly (6-0) 3 Beatrice, W, 49-7
4. Bennington (5-1) 4 Blair, W, 42-0
5. Gretna East (5-1) 5 Platteview, W, 62-21
6. Omaha Skutt (5-1) 6 Lincoln Pius X, W, 49-7
7. Seward (4-2) 8 GI Northwest, W, 49-7
8. Scottsbluff (5-1) 7 Gering, W, 34-7
9. Gretna (3-3) 9 Plattsmouth, W, 35-28
10. McCook (5-1) 10 Hastings, W, 33-0
Comments: It was a perfect 10 last week, as every ranked team won, leading to no change in Class B. Gretna is the only one that had to sweat a bit, outdueling a sturdy Plattsmouth team for a hard-fought win. You can bet Omaha Skutt will be juiced up for its shot at home against top-ranked Elkhorn North, which has only played one non-lopsided game this season. Norris and Waverly keep chugging along, as their showdown on Oct. 17 draws nearer.
CLASS C-1
School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Wahoo (6-0) 1 Mount Michael, W, 62-21
2. Central City (6-0) 2 Lincoln Christian, W, 35-8
3. Columbus Lakeview (6-0) 3 Wayne, W, 55-7
4. Ashland-Greenwood (5-1) 5 Boys Town, W, 42-7
5. Sidney (6-0) 4 Ogallala, W, 33-0
6. O’Neill (6-0) 9 Pierce, W, 33-21
7. Mount Michael (4-2) 7 Wahoo, L, 62-21
8. Fort Calhoun (5-1) 8 Logan View/S-S, W, 35-10
9. Syracuse (6-0) 10 Nebraska City, W, 49-0
10. Pierce (4-2) 6 O’Neill, L, 33-21
Comments: Wahoo quickly extinguished any hope of Mount Michael springing an upset by staking a 41-0 halftime lead. Hello. O’Neill earned the win of the week in Class C-1, going to Pierce and overcoming a halftime deficit to beat a higher-ranked team. Syracuse keeps chugging along on its undefeated season. Milford (5-1) is next up in getting a shot against Central City. That might be the game of the week.
CLASS C-
2
School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Cedar Catholic (6-0) 1 Battle Creek, W, 52-0
2. Kearney Catholic (6-0) 3 Gordon-Rushville, W, 47-16
3. Bishop Neumann (5-1) 2 Malcolm, L, 21-7
4. Norfolk Catholic (5-1) 4 West Point-Beemer, W, 37-20
5. Boone Central (4-2) 5 Centura, W, 24-20
6. Archbishop Bergan (5-1) 7 Aquinas, W, 35-7
7. Lincoln Lutheran (5-1) 8 Conestoga, W, 35-11
8. Grand Island CC (5-1) 6 Ord, L, 21-14
9. Doniphan-Trumbull (5-1) 9 Superior, W, 44-14
10. Ord (3-3) NR Grand Island CC, W, 21-14
Comments: Last week, it felt like the top teams had separated. Then this week happened. A pair of unbeatens losing games causes some movement. Bishop Neumann drops a spot with a loss to Malcolm, but the Cavaliers own a 21-14 win over Norfolk Catholic this year, so they stay ahead of the Knights. Archbishop Bergan and Lincoln Lutheran both climb a spot after GICC’s loss to Ord. The Chanticleers enter the rankings at No. 10 despite a .500 record. Ord started the season 0-3 but only has one loss to a C-2 team, falling 33-19 to Kearney Catholic. Teams like Arlington, Yutan and Malcolm are lurking just outside of the top 10.
CLASS D-1
School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Shelby-RC (6-0) 1 Centennial, W, 84-8
2. Dundy Co.-Stratton (6-0) 2 North Platte St. Pat’s, W, 47-14
3. Sandy Creek (5-1) 3 Sutton, W, 55-14
4. Wausa/Osmond (6-0) 4 Hartington-Newcastle, W, 50-24
5. Bloomfield (5-1) 5 Boyd County, W, 42-28
6. Thayer Central (5-1) 6 Southern, W, 59-0
7. Crofton (4-2) 7 Niobrara/Verdigre, W, 66-20
8. Plainview (5-1) 8 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, W, 63-12
9. Ravenna (6-0) 9 Arcadia/Loup City, W, 52-8
10. Bridgeport (5-1) NR Morrill, W, 56-6
Comments: No. 2 DCS, No. 3 Sandy Creek and No. 4 Wausa/Osmond answered the bell this week, rolling teams who only had one loss entering the week. No. 5 Bloomfield got past Boys County who put up a good fight. And Bridgeport enters the rankings at No. 10. The Bulldogs only loss this season came to DCS, which won 42-16. Bridgeport faces its toughest test since that game this week, hosting undefeated Hemingford.
CLASS D-2
School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Humphrey Archangels (6-0) 1 Osceola, W, 56-14
2. Howells-Dodge (6-0) 2 Riverside, W, 64-6
3. O’Neill St. Mary’s (6-0) 3 Elgin/PJ, W, 63-6
4. Wynot (5-1) 4 Walthill, W, fft.
5. Central Valley (6-0) 5 Twin Loup, W, 48-7
6. Lawrence-Nelson (5-1) 6 Nebraska Lutheran, W, fft.
7. Twin Loup (4-2) 7 Central Valley, L, 48-7
8. Loomis (4-2) 8 Hitchcock County, L, 28-6
9. Hitchcock County (6-0) 9 Loomis, W, 28-6
10. Anselmo-Merna (5-1) 10 Burwell, W, 58-35
Comments: Let the good times roll in Trenton, as Hitchcock County earned an impressive road win against a Loomis team that was ranked one spot above the Falcons. Credit Hitchcock County’s defense in that one. Central Valley vs. Twin Loup was the other ranked vs. ranked matchup, with Central Valley taking care of business. The question in D-2 is: how big is the gap after the top three teams?
CLASS D-6
School (Rec.) Pvs. Last Week
1. Garden County (6-0) 1 Potter-Dix, W, 87-8
2. Red Cloud (5-0) 2 Harvard, W, fft.
3. Stuart (4-1) 3 bye
4. Southwest (5-0) 4 Medicine Valley, W, 61-14
5. S-E-M (4-1) 5 Wauneta-Palisade, W, 63-33
6. Hampton (5-0) 6 Shelton, W, 42-18
7. Pawnee City (4-1) 7 Lewiston, W, 56-50
8. Leyton (5-0) 8 Creek Valley, W, 71-21
9. Wallace (4-1) 9 Paxton, W, 44-25
10. Silver Lake (4-1) 10 Dorchester, W, 66-12
Comments: The top 10 remains the same heading into week 7. In the closest game this past week, No. 7 Pawnee City got a scare from Lewiston. Next week, No. 8 Leyton gets its toughest test to date when No. 1 Garden County comes to town. A win in that game could have the Warriors skyrocket up the rankings. Also, No. 2 Red Cloud travels to No. 10 Silver Lake and No. 3 Stuart hosts No. 6 Hampton, so there could be a quite of shuffling next week.
