The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has expressed worry over the attempt by some international bodies to influence Ghana’s judicial and constitutional matters.
Speaking at the Ghana Bar Association’s Annual Conference on Monday, September 15, 2025, he acknowledged the importance of international collaborations but emphasised that it should not extend into the country’s constitutional matters.

“We must resist the temptation of inviting foreign interference in our internal constitutional processes. There is nothing wrong with building relationships with like-minded foreign associations, as these are important for exchanging ideas and improving standards. But that is where it should stop,” he stated.
Dr Ayine warned that, “Allowing interference in constitutional politics undermines the principle that sovereignty rests with the people of Ghana, in whose name and interest government authority is exercised.”

His remarks follow a joint appeal by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, urging President John Dramani Mahama to reinstate Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice of Ghana.
Gertrude Torkornoo has since been removed as Chief Justice after just two years in office, becoming the first to be dismissed under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
President John Dramani Mahama announced her removal on September 1, 2025, acting on a recommendation of a constitutional committee formed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution to probe three petitions accusing her of misconduct in office.
