President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday received letters of credence from new envoys from Egypt and the European Union at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
The two diplomats are Rasha Hamday Hussein representing the Arab Republic of Egypt and Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi for the European Union (EU) Delegation in Malawi. Both envoys will be resident in Malawi.
In his address to the media after presenting his credentials, Gaztelumendi said the EU will continue to work with Malawi in various areas of cooperation and development.
“We also discussed projects and programmes that we are working together such as electricity generation and transmission, infrastructure development, agricultural value chains and secondary education,” he said.
Gaztelumendi hailed the EU and Malawi’s 50-year bilateral relations as successful.
On her part, the Egyptian Ambassador said her country is keen to strengthen relations with Malawi in various areas of cooperation including health, infrastructure development, energy, and agriculture.
Said Hussein: “The first task will be to register the Egyptian medicine in Malawi market and to allow the Egyptian medicine to enter the market, and also to cooperate in the fields of agriculture, health, and infrastructure. There will be training programmes, and our aim is to boost the bilateral relations and enhance the cooperation between the two countries.”
In an interview, former minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo said Malawi is happy to welcome both envoys to work in the country.
She added that during the meeting, President Chakwera reiterated the importance of relationships with both Egypt and the EU.
