NASU, SSANU threaten strike over unpaid allowances, withheld salaries

From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government over unresolved labour matters affecting their members in universities and inter-university centres.

In a letter jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, on Monday, the unions accused the government of failing to act on agreements reached during previous engagements.

The unions recalled that following their June 18, 2025 letter, the Minister of Education convened a meeting on July 4, 2025, where it was agreed that a tripartite committee comprising the Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU would be constituted to resolve the disbursement of the N50 billion earned allowances.

According to them, members in universities were shortchanged, while those in inter-university centres were completely excluded from the disbursement.

They also lamented the government’s failure to pay outstanding withheld salaries, the arrears of the 25/35 per cent salary increments, and to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements with non-teaching staff.

The unions noted that while the government has already concluded renegotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), it has sidelined non-teaching staff despite their submission of memoranda and participation in the initial meetings.

“Despite our repeated efforts to draw your attention to concerns affecting our members in universities and inter-university centres, there appears to be nothing positive forthcoming from your office,” the unions wrote.

They warned that failure to address their grievances by September 22, 2025, would compel their members to embark on a series of industrial actions, including strikes.
