West Michigan architect acquires Illinois-based firm

HOLLAND, MI — GMB Architecture + Engineering on Monday, Oct. 6, announced it has acquired Richard L. Johnson and Associates, a 44-year-old architectural firm based in Rockford, Ill.
The deal, which closed Oct. 1 combines two firms that have an extensive background in education-focused architecture and engineering, according to a joint release from the companies.
“This acquisition brings together the strengths of both organizations, enhancing our collective capabilities and allowing us to create an even greater positive impact,” David Bolt, president and CEO of GMB, said in a statement. “By working as one team, we’ll be able to deliver more innovative solutions, support districts in reaching their goals, and ultimately improve the educational experience for students across the Midwest.”
GMB will continue to serve more than 30 school districts in Northwest Illinois under the Richard L. Johnson name, but the company will pursue new business under the GMB brand, a company spokesperson said.
Employees of Richard L. Johnson Associates will become part of GMB’s 100% employee-owned structure, which encourages “autonomy and responsibility over a traditional hierarchical business model,” according to GMB.
“By combining our expertise in K-12 education, higher education, and broad experience in educational design, we’re building a full-service team that can collaborate across geographies and provide long-term value for our clients,” Scott Johnson, principal at Richard L. Johnson and Associates, said in a statement.
Founded over 50 years ago in Holland, GMB specializes in architecture, engineering and marketing for K-12 schools and higher learning institutions. The company serves several West Michigan school districts, including Kentwood Public Schools, Holland Public Schools and Rockford Public Schools.
GMB also has provided services for the Outdoor Discovery Center Network and the Holland Ice Park, which is set to open Friday, Nov. 14.
