Legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick has had a humbling start to his career at North Carolina. The Tar Heels were blown out 38-10 by Clemson on Saturday, dropping UNC to 2-3 on the season.

Belichick’s former team, the New England Patriots, is trending upwards after knocking off a previously undefeated Buffalo Bills 23-20 on “Sunday Night Football.” The Patriots won the game via the heroics of former Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye, who threw for 273 yards and led the team down the field for a game-winning field goal attempt.

On Sunday night, North Carolina’s social media chose not to post anything about their former quarterback. Per Ross Martin of 247 Sports, Belichick directed the program not to post anything related to the Patriots, including highlights of Maye.
“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” Martin posted. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.”
UNC received harsh backlash online for the decision not to post anything about Maye, and the program reversed course on Monday morning, posting highlights of the Patriots’ win and Maye’s performances during his time with the Tar Heels.
“@DrakeMaye2 pulling off some magic, where have we seen this before?” Carolina Football posted on X.
The reported directive from Belichick about posting highlights of the Patriots is a new saga in the pettiness between New England and North Carolina. Belichick reportedly banned Patriots scouts from practices. New England asked members of the staff not to wear UNC gear inside its facilities.
Given the shoddy state of North Carolina’s recruiting in the offseason, it makes sense for the program to try and capitalize on Maye’s successes in the NFL this season.
North Carolina will next travel to play 4-2 California on Friday night. The 3-2 Patriots will travel to play the 1-4 New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
