Fans are puzzled by hints that season nine of 9-1-1 will follow their beloved LA first responders tackling what looks like a meteor impact.
Ahead of the new season, 9-1-1 accounts began posting teaser clips of an emergency call about what appeared to be some form of space debris crashing down, a blockbuster-movie-style plot decision that was described as “insane” by one post on TikTok.
The fan of the show continues: “I want character development, I want something that makes the characters feel like they’re real. I don’t think that’s going to be helped by Athena punching an alien in the face.”
“Why!? They did the asteroid thing in Lone Star!! Ugh I don’t wanna watch it again,” one comment on the post reads.
Another fan offered an alternative take: “I think it’s not meteors. I think it’s satellites.”
“That’s cause Bobby Nash [is] going to coming back as an alien,” another fan theorised.
The drama follows LA first responders, from firefighters to police officers and paramedics, protecting and saving LA residents. Furthermore, season nine is also set to see beloved characters attempt to move on from the death of Bobby (Peter Krause) in the previous season.
Season eight left many fans in shock, with some storylines left hanging.
‘Bobby Nash is coming back as an alien’
Athena (Angela Bassett) started to move on after Bobby’s death; Eddie (Ryan Guzman) and Christopher (Gavin McHugh) moved back to LA for good; Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) welcomed their new baby; and Buck (Oliver Stark) began looking for a place of his own.
Ahead of the upcoming season, a showrunner also teased the future of Buck and Eddie, aka ‘“Buddie”’.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Tim Minear shared what lies in store. He noted: “It really opened up for me just some great possibilities for Eddie and I’m really excited about that one.”
“Buck is quick to believe things, but Eddie might be quick to believe things now too.”
Fans have been shipping “Buddie” since Guzman’s character joined the show back in 2018, with the firefighters and best friends sharing an undeniable chemistry.
Stark has said he’d be open to exploring a potential romance if it’s “the right story to tell”.
Addressing the beloved fan “ship”, he explained he’d be interested in the best friends getting together if it’s a “natural progression”.
When does the next season of 9-1-1 come out?
The drama created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Minear is returning for its ninth season.
This upcoming series nine, comprising 18 episodes, is set to premiere on Thursday 9 October on ABC in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
However, 9-1-1 also has two spinoffs. The first is the now-cancelled 9-1-1: Lone Star. The second, 9-1-1: Nashville, is also debuting on 9 October on ABC/Disney+.
