‘The Strangers – Chapter 2’ director teases chilling backstory reveals in new sequel: ‘We wanted to look under the hood a little bit’

Renny Harlin is no stranger to intense horror and action. From the adrenaline-fueled thrills of “Cliffhanger” to the aquatic terror of “Deep Blue Sea,” he’s built a career on pushing characters (and audiences) to their limits. But with “The Strangers – Chapter 2,” Harlin takes on a different kind of challenge: expanding a home-invasion story into a tense, survival-driven horror that delves deeper into the mysterious killers at its center.

“The Strangers – Chapter 1” served as a remake of the 2008 original, introducing Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), a couple who spend the night in a remote cabin only to be terrorized by masked intruders.
Following the release of the first movie, both Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 underwent additional photography to address audience feedback and refine the story. Harlin has described these sessions as “enhancement shoots,” focusing on adding new scenes and refining existing ones to better align with audience expectations.

These additional shoots allowed Harlin and the team to fine-tune the tone, deepen the suspense, and ensure the sequels would satisfy both longtime fans and newcomers.

Arriving this week on September 26, the second movie follows Maya as she navigates the aftermath of the first attack, with flashbacks teasing potential backstories for the killers while leaving their true intentions unclear.
I had the chance to sit down with Renny Harlin to talk about “The Strangers – Chapter 2,” and how the sequel deepens the story while teasing the mysterious pasts of its killers. Plus, he even told me, “if you love the first and second movies, the third one is going to blow your head off.”
Keeping the mystery alive

‘We wanted to give the audience hints of what makes them tick’Renny Harlin, Director
During the interview, I asked Harlin how much he wanted to demystify the killers through flashbacks, and how he balanced revealing hints about their backstory while keeping them unsettling.

“That’s something that we really thought long and hard about, because we realized that the fascination with these serial killers is that their crimes are completely random, as are, in most cases, what serial killers do,” he told me.
“And we didn’t want to go and say, ‘These are the people that they are, and they are doing this because they had some misfortunes in their lives.’ Our philosophy is pretty much that if you’re a born sociopath, you will be a sociopath.”

Fans of “The Strangers” have long been fascinated by the enigmatic killers at the heart of the series. While this second chapter offers glimpses into their past, the director is careful not to reveal everything, keeping the mystery alive.

“There doesn’t have to be any real rhyme or reason to it. We wanted to give hints,” Harlin said. “We wanted to look under the hood a little bit and give the audience hints of what makes them tick without trivializing it or letting the cat out of the bag.
“And there will be more of that in the third movie, which will reveal more of the backstories without giving all the answers. So it’s a fine balancing act because we want to keep the mystery. But at the same time, I think it’s something all the fans want to know more about. You know, who is Tamara and why is all this happening?”
With “The Strangers – Chapter 2,” Harlin expands the horror beyond the familiar home invasion, teasing just enough about the killers’ past to keep fans hooked while promising even deeper revelations in the third movie.
The suspense lies as much in the unanswered questions as it does in the action on screen.
“The Strangers – Chapter 2” hits theaters on September 26, 2025.

Alix is a Senior Streaming Writer at Tom’s Guide, which basically means watching the best movies and TV shows and then writing about them. It’s a dream job for someone who’s been obsessed with storytelling since she first figured out how to work a remote.

Before joining Tom’s Guide, Alix honed her skills as a staff writer with outlets like Screen Rant and Bough Digital, where she discovered her love for the entertainment industry.

She heads to the cinema every week as a tradition, no matter what’s showing. For her, movies aren’t just entertainment — they’re a ritual, a comfort, and a constant source of inspiration. When she’s not at her desk or at the cinema, you’ll probably find her deep into a horror video game on her PC.
