Russell Martin takes Rangers players wild swimming in freezing Loch Lomond for team bonding session

Under-fire Russell Martin has taken his Ibrox squad wild swimming as he bids to keep his own head above water in his fight to keep the Rangers job. The Light Blues boss took his players for a swim in Loch Lomond and then a hike up Conic Hill as part of a day of different activities. Martin has turned to the great outdoors in a bid to try to turn his side’s fortunes around. He is looking for his new-look squad to try and bond and gel on and off the park. The former Southampton boss has decided to try something different and gone out of the box. Martin knows that his side desperately needs results if he wants to remain in post. It comes after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Hearts and large sections of the Ibrox support chanted for Martin to go. The former Scotland international is under pressure after a disastrous start to his Ibrox career – which has seen him fail to win a game in five Premiership games. He also crashed out of the Champions League qualifiers, after being thrashed by Club Brugge. His situation also hasn’t helped as midfielder Nicolas Raskin was also left out of his first-team squad for the last Celtic game. Raskin was also left out against Hearts but Martin claimed the situation had been resolved. Martin was only appointed in the summer but has been well backed financially by the new American owners. They have spent money although a lot of the signings have come from sporting director Kevin Thelwell and have struggled to hit the heights. The Ibrox board has continued to support Martin but results will need to turn quickly. It is a big fixture for them at the weekend as they face Hibs at home in the last eight of the Premier Sports Cup. If he loses that then that could well sink Martin’s Rangers career.
