Singer and composer Amaal Mallik, known for his soulful melodies and candid nature, recently shared that one of his most emotional songs, Roke Na Ruke Naina from the 2017 hit Badrinath Ki Dulhania, was born out of heartbreak. The track, sung by Arijit Singh and picturised on Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, continues to be one of Amaal’s most loved compositions — and now, fans know the deeply personal story behind it.
“I Was Going Through a Breakup”
Opening up about the time he composed the song, Amaal revealed that he was in the middle of an emotional low when director Shashank Khaitan approached him for the project. “I was going through a breakup and was supposed to go on a trip when Shashank gave me this song,” he recalled. “I initially said no, as I was about to leave, but he told me to work on it through the trip.”
Amaal shared that while he had composed many songs before, Roke Na Ruke Naina felt special because it came from a place of raw emotion. “It was a final disconnection for us — we weren’t supposed to meet again,” he said. “That’s when I wrote, Haathon ki lakeerein do milti jahan hai, jisko pata hai bata de, jagah wo kahan hai. Those lines came straight from my heart.”
Arijit Singh Recorded the Song in 20 Minutes
The music director also revealed an interesting detail about how the song was recorded. Amaal said that Arijit Singh, who eventually went on to win a Filmfare Award for the track, completed the recording in just 20 minutes.
“Arijit was supposed to record this, and my friends were waiting to meet him. He just came, recorded within 20 minutes, and those very 20 minutes won him the Filmfare,” Amaal shared with a smile.
When Amaal Spoke About His Breakup
Amaal had previously spoken about his breakup on Bigg Boss 19, revealing that it was a difficult period marked by emotional and cultural conflict. He shared that the relationship ended due to family opposition over religious differences and that the situation took a toll on his partner’s health.
He also recalled how his ex-girlfriend had called him before her wedding, pleading for him to attend. “She said she wouldn’t get married if I didn’t come,” Amaal remembered. “But I couldn’t. I had to respect my parents’ wishes.”
A Song That Still Resonates
Years later, Roke Na Ruke Naina remains one of Amaal Mallik’s most hauntingly beautiful compositions — a song that captures the ache of love lost and the quiet strength of moving on. For Amaal, it wasn’t just another melody, but an emotional release that transformed his pain into timeless music.
