Bryan Health has announced that the Lincoln-based health system is partnering with an Omaha-based independent physicians group to build a new outpatient health care campus at 204th Street and West Center Road in the Elkhorn area.
Bryan is establishing the Bryan Elkhorn Campus on 14.6 acres on the intersection’s southwest corner with the Midwest Independent Physicians Private Practice Association, or MIPPA, a group of about 900 primary care physicians, specialists and other health care providers who are not tied to a specific health system in Nebraska or western Iowa.
The first phase of the campus will feature two medical office buildings, totaling approximately 137,000 square feet and slated to open in 2027. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The buildings — one measuring approximately 76,000 square feet and the other about 41,000 — will be designed to house a variety of outpatient services, including primary care, specialty care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and outpatient surgery. MIPPA also will open and own an urgent care center on the campus and have its first dedicated office space there.
John Woodrich, Bryan Health’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the services available on the campus should help serve the rapid residential growth happening in that area of Elkhorn.
“I think the collaboration with the doctors in that community and what we’ve come up with here is something I believe the community would be very proud of,” he said.
The campus will be Bryan Health’s first location in the Omaha metro area, Woodrich said. Its nearest clinic is situated in Ashland. The health system also operates facilities in Crete, Grand Island, Kearney and Central City.
Dr. Stephen Williams, president of MIPPA, said the project grew out of a conversation between the two organizations about three and a half years ago about how they could benefit each other.
Not only was the providers’ group interested in a place where members could practice together if they choose, he said, it wanted to have an urgent care and a surgical center. But it needed assistance from a group like Bryan.
Because not many member practices operate in southwest Omaha, Williams said, the location also will provide members with an opportunity to have a satellite location in the fast-growing area. Some Bryan physicians also will provide services at the campus.
Woodrich said Bryan is a big supporter of physicians remaining in private practice. Lincoln is somewhat unusual in that about 80% of its physicians practice independently.
While some practices need to be affiliated with hospitals, he said, having doctors “hanging a shingle” in a community helps provide continuity of care for patients, meaning they can usually see the same provider whenever they’re sick and that the provider is likely to be there for them for the long haul.
“I don’t know how you put a dollar value to it, but it’s extremely valuable to the patient,” Woodrich said.
The partners have additional land next to the medical office buildings that would allow them to add other buildings and parking, he said. But no definitive plans currently are in place.
MIPPA and Bryan are partnering on the project with Goldenrod Companies, an Omaha-based commercial real estate developer with experience in health care facilities.
Woodrich said the health system previously worked with the company in Kearney, where Goldenrod was instrumental in developing Bryan’s Kearney Regional Medical Center.
“Through our collaboration with Bryan Health and MIPPA, the Bryan Elkhorn Campus will provide families with greater access to exceptional care, close to home,” Zach Wiegert, managing principal with the developer, said in a statement.
