The festival of Sharad Purnima is observed on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Ashwin, and October 6 marks this sacred occasion. According to religious beliefs, Sharad Purnima is celebrated as the divine manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. Spiritually and astrologically, this night holds immense significance.
It is believed to be the only night of the year when the moon is at its brightest and fullest, and preparing and offering kheer (a traditional Indian rice pudding) on this night is considered highly auspicious.
According to tradition, kheer left under the moonlight on Sharad Purnima absorbs healing and divine properties, turning it into a nectar-like substance. Consuming this kheer is said to help alleviate various health issues.
If you’re observing the ritual at home, it’s important to follow the correct auspicious timings (muhurat) to gain the full spiritual and medicinal benefits.
Why ‘Kheer’ Is Offered On Sharad Purnima?
Sharad Purnima is also known as Kojagari Purnima, derived from the phrase ‘Ko Jagarti?’ meaning ‘Who is awake?’ According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi descends to Earth on this night, blessing those who remain awake, meditate, and perform good deeds.
In Ayurvedic tradition, kheer or milk left in the moonlight is believed to develop nectar-like qualities. It is known to soothe the pitta dosha, support blood pressure regulation, and aid restful sleep.
This age-old custom is not merely symbolic, it is deeply rooted in Vedic, Ayurvedic, and astrological wisdom, combining lunar energy, medicinal properties, and the blessings of the goddess.

Moonlight storage: From moonrise at 5:27 pm, but traditionally after Bhadra ends at 10:53 pm is preferred.
Note: While Bhadra has no direct effect on storing kheer, it is customary to wait until after it ends.
How to Store Kheer:
Place the kheer in a vessel (preferably silver, copper, or glass)
Cover it with a clean white cotton cloth.
Leave it in a safe, open space, such as a terrace or balcony, where it can absorb direct moonlight without contamination.
When To Consume Sharad Purnima ‘Kheer’?
Kheer should be eaten before sunrise the next morning, as its spiritual and healing potency is believed to diminish afterwards.
The ideal time to consume it is between 4:00 am and around 5:30 am, after your morning bath and meditation.
How To Prepare Sharad Purnima ‘Kheer’?
Use only cow’s milk and rice to prepare the kheer.
Add a pinch of saffron for added fragrance and purity.
Once cooked, store the kheer in a container and leave it in the moonlight for at least 2 to 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
Some devotees consume it after a few hours, while others wait until early morning. Either way, the ritual is believed to bring good health, peace, and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
