Elon Musk brought down the hammer and doubled down recently on calls for Netflix subscribers to cancel their membership.
His stern position on the matter comes after Hamish Steele’s comments. The director of a canceled Netflix animated series made comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. As a result, he’s calling for subscribers to take it out on Netflix while also taking aim at the streaming giant’s LGBTQ programming and diversity efforts.
“Cancel Netflix,” Musk wrote Wednesday afternoon in an X post. He quoted another post made by the right-wing Libs of TikTok account. The account shared screenshots of a company report where Netflix reported it had increased the number of non-white directors and lead actors on its program.
Before then, in an X post on Tuesday, Musk reshared a post from another user who wrote that they’re canceling their Netflix subscription due to the company employing, “someone who celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk and makes content that pushes pro-trans content on my kids.”
In response to that post, Musk wrote, “Same.”
It all seems to stem from a post made by Steele criticizing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s X post mourning Kirk’s death. Per a screenshot of the post, which was shared on X by Libs of TikTok, the animated show’s director wrote, “Why the [expletive] are you even commenting on this, [expletive] head….a random nazi gets shot and it’s a public statement.”
Earlier, the Libs accounts shared clips of Steele’s animated show, “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” which was canceled in January 2023. To the Libs, the show was “pushing pro-transgender on CHILDREN.”
The animated show was a comedy series that ran for two seasons on the streaming platform from June to October 2022. The scary series followed a diverse group of employees at a haunted theme park that featured vengeful spirits, a talking pug and meaningful LGBTQ+ representation.”
One of the clips in question that circulated was of “Dead End: Paranormal Park” protagonist Barney Guttman, who came out transgender to his friend Norma.
“I’m trans, Norma,” Barney says. “Being here, it’s like a whole new place. I can just be Barney, and I can choose if and when I tell people.” The character says he has “never been happier” and says it is important to “live your life without apology.” Libs of TikTok shared the clip and accused the show of pushing “pro-transgender” on “7-YEAR-OLDS.”
Musk then reshared the post attacking the animated show, writing, “This is not okay.” He later put up another post that attacked Netflix for pushing a “transgender woke agenda,” writing, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”
Following the tumultuous events for the streamer, Netflix’s shares were down 2.2% to $1,173.12 as of Wednesday afternoon.
