In a significant boost to educational infrastructure in the Bongo District, the Catholic Education Unit of St. Anne Parish has officially handed over a fully renovated six-bedroom teachers’ quarters at Fr. Lebel R/C Primary School to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Once abandoned and left to decay, the building has been restored through a collaborative effort between the Parish, local community members, and international partners.
At a brief ceremony on Friday, September 12, 2025, Rev. Fr. Ernest, representing the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Kenneth Anyanyeya Atiah, commissioned the facility and handed it over to Stephen Akantuge, Head of Teaching and Learning at the District Education Directorate.
“This project is not just about a building; it’s about dignity, motivation, and commitment to our teachers,” said Rev. Fr. Ernest. “We hope it provides them with the comfort they need to give their best in the classroom.”
Francis Awan Ndago, Acting Local Manager of Catholic Unit Schools in the Parish, who led the initiative, emphasized the importance of maintenance and accountability.
“All occupants must sign an occupancy policy contract,” Mr. Ndago said. “This is a shared resource, and we must ensure it is preserved for future generations of teachers.”
The renovation, which cost approximately GH¢60,000, was funded by St. Martinus Church in Greven, Germany, a sister parish to St. Anne. Local community members also contributed through free artisanal labour, showcasing strong community ownership of the project.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), who attended the event, expressed appreciation to the Catholic Church and its partners for their continuous support to the district.
“The Church has been a steadfast development partner,” the DCE said. “From infrastructure to teaching materials, they’ve shown true commitment to improving education. We urge them to continue this valuable collaboration with both the Assembly and GES.”
Over the past few years, St. Anne Parish and its education unit, supported by both local fundraising and external donors, have implemented a series of educational interventions. These include improving water supply to schools, providing furniture and classroom spaces, supplying ICT equipment, supporting underprivileged children, and offering training programs for teachers.
“This is part of our broader mission to promote quality education and holistic development in the district,” Mr. Ndago added.
With the new facility in place, the Parish hopes the upgraded accommodation will attract and retain qualified teachers in rural areas, ultimately improving learning outcomes for children in the Bongo District.
