The Philadelphia Phillies got as good news as they probably could have about center fielder Harrison Bader on Sunday.
Bader left Game 1 of the National League Division Series in the seventh inning with groin tightness Saturday night. The Los Angeles Dodgers won Game 1 5-3. Game 2 will be at 6:08 p.m. Monday.
Manager Rob Thomson said Sunday on Zoom that imaging revealed Bader suffered no major strain or tear.
Bader will undergo more treatment Sunday. His status for Game 2 won’t be known until Monday, according to Thomson.
“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Thomson said. “But I think, after the game, they stretched him out, they got him moving around a little bit and I think he felt a lot better after that. We’ll know whether he’s available to start or at least to pinch-hit.”
Bader sounded optimistic about being able to play after Saturday’s loss.
“I definitely feel like I’ll be able to come back, for sure,” he said. “We have an off day (Sunday). And we’ll just get some imaging done and go from there. But this is kinda the point in the season where you just empty the tank.”
The Phillies acquired Bader in a July 31 trade with the Minnesota Twins. Bader sparked the Phillies with a .305/.361/.463 slash line the last two months of the season.
If Bader cannot start, the Phillies would most likely start left-handed batting Brandon Marsh in center. That would put Philadelphia at a matchup disadvantage against Dodgers Game 2 lefty starter Blake Snell.
