Abronye DC released after court approves GHC 50,000 bail

An Accra circuit court on Monday granted bail to Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Abronye DC, after his arrest last week on charges of “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.”

The court set bail at 50,000 cedis with one surety, his lawyer Daniel Mantey Addo said.

Addo told reporters that Abronye’s health had worsened in detention and that the bail decision had brought “some relief.” He said the legal team was working to meet the conditions for his immediate release.

Police said Abronye was arrested on 8 September following public comments, including allegations against the Inspector General of Police and the governing party, which authorities described as potentially inflammatory.

Shortly before his arrest, Abronye had sought political asylum in eight countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany, citing what he called “persistent political persecution, threats to his life, and misuse of state security powers under the current government.”
