Medicos demand arrest of attackers on house-surgeon; resort to sit-in protest

A large number of post-graduate students and house surgeons at the Sivaganga government hospital resorted to a sit-in protest demanding the arrest of suspects who were involved in the attack of a doctor on September 28. The agitators, who took out a procession within the GH campus on Sunday, squatted on the premises protesting against the lackadaisical attitude of the police. It is said that on September 28, a patient identified as Balamurugan of Nehru Bazaar Street was involved in a two-wheeler accident and rushed to the hospital. As the duty doctors delayed treatment, agitated family members and some relatives picked up an argument with the doctors and allegedly assaulted. Demanding the arrest, the TN Medical Students Association submitted a petition to the Dean Srinivasan. As the students were determined that they would not give up their strike, senior officials including RMO, RDO and DSP held talks. They assured that firm action would be taken in two days, the strike was withdrawn, police said.
