While Gilmore Girls fans have been clamoring for another sequel spinoff since the disappointing A Year in the Life, now more than ever is the best time to revive the series — for a very specific reason. After creator Amy Sherman-Palladino left the show in its final season, resulting in Gilmore Girls season 7 being reviled by the fandom, we’ve been desperate for a better final chapter for Lorelai and Rory.
That’s what made 2016’s A Year in the Life such a frustrating Gilmore Girls installment, as it was full of confusing and unpopular storylines and a cliffhanger surrounding Rory’s pregnancy. Since we’re well into autumn, and thus bingeing our favorite Gilmore Girls fall episodes, the show is top of mind. But the fall season isn’t the only reason to reboot the show again.
October 5, 2025 Marks The 25-Year Anniversary Of Gilmore Girls’ Premiere
25 years ago, Lorelai strode into Luke’s diner, begged him for more coffee, bantered with her sweet daughter Rory — who was wearing her iconic autumn-perfect cableknit sweater — and just like that, Gilmore Girls hooked us right from its opening scene.
Between its core mother-daughter relationship, cozy small-town vibes, and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s unmatched screwball dialogue, there’s a reason Gilmore Girls is a show you can’t just watch once. Though it’s been two-and-a-half decades since its premiere, fans are still embarking on yearly rewatches of Gilmore Girls.
The series is constantly attracting new fans, whether they’re younger generations who weren’t even born when Gilmore Girls was on the air, or people who didn’t watch when it was on. When Gilmore Girls found a home on Netflix, that attracted tons of new viewers, as did the COVID-19 pandemic, as people were eager for a comforting show in hard, uncertain times.
Now, Gilmore Girls-mania is higher than ever thanks to the show’s 25-year anniversary. Last month, in honor of the milestone, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel reunited at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards as presenters. They joked about how Gilmore Girls “took the season of fall hostage” in a nod to fans’ love for the show’s autumnal aesthetic.
Earlier this week, Graham also received her long-overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Between presenting at the Emmys, Graham’s star, and the fact that we’re still in love with Gilmore Girls 25 years later, the show has proven that it’s left a permanent mark on pop culture, and changed it for the better. There couldn’t be a better time to give Gilmore Girls its well-deserved second revival.
The Upcoming Gilmore Girls Documentary Proves How Many Cast Members Still Love The Show
Gilmore Girls’ 25-year anniversary is the gift that keeps on giving because there is now a Gilmore Girls documentary in the works in its honor. Drink Coffee, Talk Fast will feature exclusive interviews from prominent cast members, including Kelly Bishop (Emily), Keiko Agena (Lane), and Jared Padalecki (Dean), along with the show’s creatives and its biggest fans.
The doc will explore how and why Gilmore Girls hit as big as it did, the community that came from the show, and its effect on culture as a whole. There is no current release date for Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, but their Kickstarter page, in which the creatives are looking for funding to finish the film, has well surpassed its goal, so it’s only a matter of time.
The fact that so many cast members participated in the documentary speaks to their love for the series, and that it has a special place in their hearts. At one point in the recently released trailer, Padalecki even tears up while giving an interview.
Of course, this doesn’t guarantee the actors would return for another revival, and even if they would, there’d likely be conditions. Bishop said a Gilmore Girls revival could only work with Amy Sherman-Palladino at the helm — and rightfully so. Meanwhile, Agena chanted, “Justice for Lane!” which could suggest she’d only come back if her character was (finally) given the proper storyline she deserves.
With Gilmore Girls still so beloved by the people who made it great, and nobody having publicly shot down the idea of another revival, it’s high time that it happens.
Multiple Gilmore Girls Cast Members Have Suggested A Christmas Movie
Drink Coffee, Talk Fast released another clip in which its interview subjects batted around ideas of what another Gilmore Girls sequel could look like. Some ideas included Stars Hollow in the ’60s, a Miss Patty and Babette story, a Richard and Emily prequel, and a Dean and Jess reunion.
However, one idea stood out above the others: a Gilmore Girls Christmas movie. Rose Abdoo (Gypsy/Berta) and Sally Struthers (Babette) were very enthusiastic about this in their joint interview. “What’s happening in Stars Hollow for Christmas?” Struthers said. “It would be really nice to visit everybody.”
Interestingly, Lauren Graham shared a similar sentiment. Though neither she nor Bledel appears to be taking part in the Gilmore Girls doc, back in September on the Emmys red carpet, Graham spoke to THR about what a potential revival could look like.
“I’ve been saying for a long time, what I could see making sense is a Christmas movie, in the tradition of Downton Abbey or those other kinds of shows that are ‘over,’ but then kind of come together, especially around the holidays. I think that would be very Gilmore-friendly.”
She’s not wrong. Much like Gilmore Girls, the Christmas-holiday season radiates cozy vibes, and though the show is most associated with autumn, winter is a close second, with “I smell snow” being one of Lorelai’s best Gilmore Girls quotes.
It would also be perfect because Gilmore Girls never actually had a full-fledged Christmas episode. Yes, plenty of episodes took place around the holiday season, from Richard’s health scare at his and Emily’s Christmas dinner in season 1 to Lorelai causing tension with Christopher in season 7 by refusing to celebrate the season until Rory returns from London after visiting Logan.
