'Rohit Sharma Staying As ODI Captain Could Have Disturbed Team Culture'

The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee took a bold call and removed Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy. Rohit, who now only plays ODI cricket, looked set to continue as the captain till the 2027 ODI World Cup as he led the Men in Blue to a title win in the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year. With an eye on the ODI WC, the selectors decided that it was the right time to promote vice-captain Shubman Gill. Gill assisted Rohit in the CT. Speaking to The Times of India, BCCI sources said that Rohit’s staying as the ODI captain could have disturbed the team culture. He quit T20I cricket after leading India to a title win in the 2024 World Cup. Rohit retired from Tests days before the selection meeting for the England tour. “A player of Rohit’s stature in a leadership role would have meant he would get to drive his philosophy in the dressing room. But with him playing only in ODIs, a format which is played the least, it could have disturbed the team culture. Gambhir had taken a back seat in Tests and ODIs in the first six months of his assignment but the debacles against New Zealand and Australia prompted him to take charge more firmly,” BCCI sources told TOI.
