The New York Knicks brought back guard Landry Shamet on a one-year deal with minimal guarantees, giving the team flexibility to move on from him after training camp. The deal was expected as reports continuously linked Shamet to a return. After ESPN’s Shams Charania announced the new deal, guard Josh Hart celebrated the move and return of his teammate.More news: Knicks Make Big Free Agent Move, Sign Veteran Guard”YEA LAN!,” wrote Hart on a social media post. The 2024-25 NBA season was the first that Shamet and the former Villanova product shared, though it was clearly a fruitful one.The Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals after beating the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs. While Shamet did not play much in the playoffs, he received a good amount of playing time in the regular season. The seven-year NBA veteran played 50 games last year, averaging 15.2 minutes per appearance.During his outings, he put up 5.7 points, 0.5 assists, and 1.2 rebounds per contest. Shamet specializes as a 3-point shooter, and last season, he shot an impressive 39.7 percent from beyond the arc on a solid volume of 3.1 attempts per game.Floor spacing is highly valued in the modern NBA, but Shamet’s poor defense due to his size and lack of length leaves him in a specialized role.More news: Knicks Insider Shuts Down Recent Ben Simmons Report, Reigniting SpeculationWhere does Shamet’s Signing Leave the Knicks Roster? In conjunction with the Shamet deal, the Knicks also agreed to terms with veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon on a one-year, non-guaranteed deal. They also signed Garrison Mathews. The Knicks only have room on the roster for one of Brogdon, Shamet or Mathews, leaving them all fighting for a spot.If the team wanted to keep two of them, according to reporting from SNY’s Ian Begley, either Pacôme Dadiet or Miles McBride could be traded.Considering his key role during the playoffs last season, McBride will likely stay in New York unless a team makes a worthwhile offer. The Knicks are also working out other NBA veterans, such as Thomas Bryant, while also showing interest in Trey Jemison III as potential big man depth.Training camp should provide a clearer picture of the roster when players compete with each other, and the coaching staff can make decisions.More news: Knicks Reportedly Have Trade Offer On the TableFor all the latest NBA news and rumors, head over to Newsweek Sports.
