Monster: The Ed Gein Story has landed on Netflix with a star-studded cast. It’s the third series of Ian Brennan’s true crime anthology series, following The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022 and The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in 2024. This time, it focuses on serial killer Ed Gein ( played by actor Charlie Hunnam ). The eight-part drama focuses on the sickening crimes committed by Gein, as well as how the case influenced Hollywood horror. It explores how crimes influenced iconic American horror flicks such as Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Monster: The Ed Gein Story features an impressive cast. Here’s a look at where you may have seen some of the cast members before. British actor Charlie Hunnam has undergone a dramatic transformation for the lead role as serial killer Ed Gein. He is best known for his roles in the likes of Sons Of Anarchy, Shantaram, The Gentleman and Rebel Moon. Discussing how he had to lose weight for the role, he told Tudum: “I lost almost 30 pounds just to get a more malnourished, light frame. Ed was incredibly lithe. And so that was a big part of the physicality. “I spent a lot of time thinking about where his energy was, that he’s not particularly confident or, like, front-foot type of energy. How to not take up a lot of space, not to be sort of front and center and too confident in my physicality was really important.” Actress and composer Suzanna Son plays Adeline Watkins, the alleged girlfriend of Ed Gein. Son counts credits in Red Rocket, The Idol on HBO and Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen. Adeline Watkins reportedly said she dated the killer for 20 years and turned down a marriage proposal from him. However, she later retracted her statements and claimed she never went inside his house, where his horrific collection of human remains were kept. British thespian Olivia Williams plays screenwriter and editor Alma Reville, who was married to Alfred Hitchcock and helped him write several of his movies, such as The Lady Vanishes and Shadow of a Doubt. Williams has appeared in the likes of Rushmore, The Sixth Sense, Peter Pan, Anna Karenina, The Father, and An Education. Luxembourgish-German actress Vicky Krieps plays the sadistic Ilse Koch, a real-life figure known as the B**** of Buchenwald. Krieps has starred in Bergman Island, Corsage, A Most Wanted Man, Hold Me Tight and Phantom Thread. British acting legend Lesley Manville portrays hardware store owner Bernice Worden, who becomes caught in Gein’s crosshairs and becomes one of his victims. Manville has appeared in Maleficent, Secrets and Lies, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Mr. Turner, Vera Drake, and Phantom Thread. American singer Addison Rae is playing Evelyn, a babysitter whom Gein becomes obsessed with. Evelyn went missing and is presumed dead. It’s not Rae’s first acting job as she has previously appeared in He’s All That and Thanksgiving. Gein’s domineering mother Augusta Gein is portrayed Laurie Metcalf, whose biggest projects include The Big Bang Theory, Lady Bird, Desperately Seeking Susan, Roseanne, The Connors and The Dropout. Metcalf was the only choice for Gein’s mother, with writer Ian Brennan saying: “I grew up in Chicago doing theater, so that’s as close to a theater goddess actually exists in real life [sic]. “It makes your job so much easier when you get somebody like her.” Actor and musician Joey Pollari takes on the role of Psycho’s Norman Bates star Anthony Perkins. He has appeared in American Crime, The Inbetweeners, and Love, Simon. He released his second album, I’ll Be Romance, in 2024. Tom Hollander looks completely unrecognisable as legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. The star won a BAFTA for his performance in the BBC series, The Night Manager, and one for the BBC sitcom Rev, which he co-wrote. He has appeared in the likes of Pride and Prejudice (2005) as Mr Collins and the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise. Some of his other projects have included The White Lotus, Gosford Park, Feud: Bette and Joan Other cast members include Charlie Hall as Deputy Worden and the son of Bernice Worden, Tyler Jacob Moore as Sheriff Schley, Mimi Kennedy as Dr Mildred Newman, Will Brill as director Tobe Hooper, and Robin Weigert as Adeline’s mother Enid Watkins.
