Galamsey threatens Ghana’s future; Judiciary must act without fear – Anglican Bishop

The Judiciary Service has been challenged to zealously use justice to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to the Anglican Bishop of the Accra Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel S. M. Torto, the judiciary must be firmer than other arms of government in confronting the menace that continues to poison communities and destroy the environment.

Delivering a sermon at the special church service to open the 68th Legal Year on Saturday October 4, he stressed that galamsey represents one of the most dangerous threats to Ghana’s future, undermining both public health and national development.

He urged judges and court officers to treat the issue as a matter of justice and accountability, applying the law without fear or favour.

The service was held on the theme “Building the Pillars of Justice Delivery through Leadership, Innovation and Technology.” Against this backdrop, the Bishop emphasised that combating illegal mining must be viewed not only as an environmental or economic challenge but also as a fundamental test of the country’s justice system.

Touching on wider governance issues, he linked the persistence of galamsey to weak enforcement and a lack of accountability. He maintained that if the judiciary plays its role firmly, it can help end the menace, protect natural resources, and restore confidence in Ghana’s commitment to the rule of law.
