FAWE Ghana builds capacity of journalists on adolescent health

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana has organized a three-day capacity-building training in Bolgatanga to strengthen the ability of media practitioners to advocate for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (ASRHR) and Gender Equality (GE).

The training, held from September 11 to 13, 2025, at Ganass Hotel, brought together 19 selected journalists who were equipped with skills on how to effectively report on adolescent health and gender-related issues.

As part of the Social Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) Project, the initiative sought to reintroduce participants to practical tools and techniques for advocacy, while promoting gender-sensitive reporting on ASRHR and GE issues within the Upper East Region and beyond.

The facilitator, Kwesi Ghartey-Tagoe, guided trainees through gender-sensitive reporting, including practical guidance on the dos and don’ts of covering gender issues. The sessions also addressed critical ASRHR challenges such as unintended pregnancies, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), while emphasizing fairness and equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of sex.

Participants were further trained on the elements of impactful storytelling, focusing on relatable characters, emotional appeal, relevance, and audience engagement. The training combined both practical and theoretical approaches to enhance learning outcomes.

At the end of the program, participants expressed that the sessions had inspired and motivated them to improve their reporting. They pledged to apply the new skills acquired to strengthen advocacy around adolescent health and gender equality in their respective communities.
