The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) said it was mobilising support across Tamil Nadu for its fight against the privatisation of solid waste management.
Union member V. Shankar said discussions were under way with its wing in Bengaluru.
Mr. Shankar recently announced that the AICCTU plans to coordinate with its affiliates in other States to build solidarity on the issue. He added that the response from workers had been strong and further programmes would be announced in the coming weeks.
On September 9, conservancy workers affiliated with the AICCTU held a victory conference in Bengaluru to celebrate the appointment of over 12,000 workers as permanent employees, following Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s May 1 announcement.
The union has been holding meetings in several districts, including Salem, Tiruppur, and Tirunelveli, to garner support from workers and the public. According to the union, privatisation would affect the livelihoods of conservancy workers employed by urban local bodies.
