KUCHING, Oct 4: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced an allocation of RM20 million to implement training and upskilling programmes emphasising an apprenticeship approach for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

In a Sarawak Information Department news, Abang Johari highlighted the need for strategic transformation, human capital development in tandem with Sarawak’s natural resource wealth, and mastery of technology as critical enablers of the State’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“Sarawak is not only advancing towards a high-income economy, but also one that is knowledge-based, technology-driven and environmentally friendly. To achieve this, the government and the private sector must work hand in hand,” he said during his keynote address at the 5th Premier of Sarawak Industry Excellence Awards (PSIEA) held at a leading hotel here on Friday night (Oct 3).

He also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) for uniting entrepreneurs under one platform and urged the private sector to seize emerging opportunities from renewable energy investments in solar, hydro and hydrogen.

This year’s PSIEA, themed “Environmental Sustainability, Economic Prosperity and Inclusive Society,” underscores Sarawak’s commitment to driving sustainable growth while fostering inclusivity and shared prosperity.

The biennial awards, jointly organised by SBF and the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), in collaboration with the Sarawak SME Association and supported by the Sarawak government, have been the benchmark for industrial excellence since their establishment in 2017.

The programme celebrates organisations that demonstrate outstanding performance, innovation, sustainability and good governance, while elevating Sarawak businesses to the national stage through the Industry Excellence Awards (AKI).

At the Gala Night, Raya Khas Sdn Bhd was named winner of the Excellence Category and also received the PSIEA Gold – Large Category award. Senari Synergy Sdn Bhd and Taka Patisserie Sdn Bhd also bagged PSIEA Gold in the Large Category, while Senari Synergy Port Sdn Bhd emerged as the sole winner of the PSIEA Gold – Medium Category.

Other recognitions presented included PSIEA Silver for Large, Medium and Small Categories; PSIEA Bronze for Large, Medium and Small Categories; as well as PSIEA Bronze – Micro Category.

Also present at the event were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Deputy Minister for International Trade and Investment Datuk Malcom Mussen Lamoh, and SBF president Dato Sri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg. — DayakDaily
