‘Dead of Winter’ Synopsis
From IMDb, here’s the synopsis for the movie:
A woman, travelling alone through snowbound northern Minnesota, interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl. Hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, she realizes that she is the young girl’s only hope.
Emma Thompson’s Minnesota Accent in ‘Dead of Winter’
When I was watching the trailer for the movie, at first, I didn’t notice too crazy of an accent. Of course, Emma has a British accent, and she doesn’t in the movie, so right away her voice is different from normal, but nothing screamed Minnesota accent to me.
But then, at about 42 seconds into the trailer, you hear it. It’s not like it’s an aggressive accent, but you can hear that she did her research on our accent, and it’s kind of hilarious to hear.
Emma did an interview with On Demand Entertainment about filming the movie. First of all, they talked about filming in Finland and how she couldn’t believe how much snow there was or how cold it was.
She said, when she arrived in Finland, it was -29 C (which is -20 F), and it was just SO COLD. Then she mentioned how when it got up to -20 C (-4 F) it felt so warm! So true, though.
How Emma Thompson Got Her Minnesota Accent for ‘Dead of Winter’
Then, they talked about Emma’s accent in the movie. She said she was able to get it down because of one of the director’s aunts that she talked to quite a bit for the role.
The interviewer then went as far as saying that the accent was “beautiful”. WHAT?! I mean, I’ll take it. Usually, people make fun of us for our accent, so I’m all for this, but that’s still super funny!
