Govt. will resolve PHC doctors’ issues, says A.P. Health Minister

Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has said the NDA government is determined to resolve the issues of PHC doctors who have been on strike since September 29.

In a statement issued on Saturday, he said the demands, which included an increase in reservation for PHC doctors wanting to pursue PG courses in the State, eligibility of all clinical branches for the quota, tribal allowances, time-bound promotions, among others, would be brought to the notice of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and an appropriate decision taken soon.

The Minister held a meeting with Health and Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian, Public Health Director K. Padmavathi, and Director of Medical Education Raghunandan on Saturday.

He cited a report submitted by a committee formed by the government to look into the scope of implementation of the quota for in-service candidates. He said, according to the report, there were only 100 assistant professor posts in teaching hospitals and three in those falling under the purview of the Directorate of Secondary Health for the year 2025-26.

Based on this, under the in-service quota for PHC doctors, only 103 posts would be available. But, 190 in-service doctors got PG seats under the quota.

Many MBBS students, after completion of their course, choose a career in the Primary Health Centres, a government job, to not only serve the public but also to get a seat in their desired medical branch in Post Graduation through a quota earmarked for them.

While the doctors had been opposing the reduction in quota for more than a year now, the government maintained that there were insufficient vacancies.

The Minister said this year 327 doctors, who completed their PG, would be joining government duties. In 2026, 450 doctors, who are studying at present, would be joining government duties. The number of PG doctors joining duties would be 312 in 2027. There are no vacant posts to absorb all the doctors wanting to pursue PG courses through the quota, the Minister said.

He appealed to the PHC doctors to join duty immediately. He said a special committee had already been formed to look into their demand for time-bound promotions and payment of allowances.
