Nod for construction of drainage system along hockey turf at Maharaja’s College ground

The Higher Education department has accorded an administrative sanction of ₹43.7 lakh for setting up a drainage system along the hockey turf at the Maharaja’s College ground here.

The lack of a proper drainage system had resulted in frequent waterlogging at the site and near to the college hostel. Though an international-level hockey turf was set up at the college ground, the recurring waterlogging issue had remained a hurdle, said T.J. Vinod, MLA.

The turf is located on a higher ground and hence the nearby area was hit by waterlogging. Without resolving this issue, it was difficult to open up the turf as the players would find it difficult, he said in a communication on Monday.

Mr. Vinod pointed out that the nearby offices were also facing the problems created by waterlogging in the ground. Having a proper drainage system was the only permanent solution. Considering the emergency situation, the Higher Education department had sanctioned an estimate of ₹43.78 lakh prepared by the Department of Public Works, he said.

The entry to the hockey turf though the Hospital Road had turned difficult in view of the recurrent waterlogging. The waterlogging issue had emerged as the facility was constructed after raising the land. The lack of a proper drainage system had aggravated the problem.
