It’s well-known that maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. We all aspire to stay fit and well, and consume food that benefits us . However, according to a dietitian, it also affects how we age. Nichole, recognised as oncology.nutrition.rd on TikTok , is renowned for sharing health guidance online, and she recently focused on the one food that could potentially elevate cancer risk. She stated that consuming 50g of the common food daily could actually raise risk of the illness “by 18%”. In a video, she recently explained everything as there are two things that could genuinely hamper your health in the long-term, and she mentioned some people don’t realise the impact diet can have on their body. Nichole stated: “As a cancer dietitian I talk about how there are only two foods that increase your cancer risk. Alcohol is number one – it’s going to increase risk of seven different cancers, and then processed meat, which are those pre-cooked meats in the grocery store that increase the risk of colorectal cancer. “So this is relative risk, it can increase your risk more and more over time, the more that you have compared to someone who hasn’t had any of those. Some people will be like ‘oh, it’s only a few percentages, or 15%, like that’s not that much.’ “You obviously haven’t had cancer. You obviously haven’t known anyone to have cancer. Do you think anyone will want to increase their risk?” The video has been viewed hundreds of times since it was posted, with people quick to comment as well. Some shared their own personal experiences too. One said: “Exactly. Stage 4 NHL here. This information is extremely important.” Another wrote: “Well said!” A third also replied: “Alcohol shouldn’t even be considered food!” Consuming processed meat has been linked to a heightened risk of colorectal cancer (cancer that affects the colon or rectum). Research has demonstrated it can influence cancer development at some stage, though eating it doesn’t guarantee you’ll develop cancer. Nitrates and nitrites added to processed meats can result in compounds forming that harm DNA. Processed meat is essentially meat that isn’t sold fresh. It might be cured, salted, smoked or preserved through other methods. Typical examples include bacon, sandwich ham, corned beef and certain sausages, such as hot dogs, salami and pepperoni. Meanwhile, alcohol has also been connected to increased risk as it can cause cells to divide more frequently, which raises the likelihood of something going awry and cancer forming. The more you consume, the greater your risk might be, though it doesn’t guarantee you’ll develop cancer if you drink alcohol. It’s just something you need to be aware of.
