A California coffee shop owner’s support for Charlie Kirk drew heavy backlash until her community and people across the nation learned of the situation.
Invita Café in Rancho Santa Fe put stickers on its cups to honor Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA, after he was fatally shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10, Fox News reported Thursday.
The stickers read, “Thank you, Charlie Kirk” and, “We Love You.” Cafe owner Sara De Luca told the outlet she had supported Kirk for many years and did not think twice about showing her respect in that way.
“When Israel went to war, we put on Israel stickers and started to support some of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]. I would say that was when I was like, ‘Let’s be courageous.’ But with Charlie, we had hosted him. We had met him. We’ve met Erika,” she explained.
A few days after Kirk’s assassination, Invita posted a memorial message and said for one day it would donate 100 percent of its proceeds to Turning Point USA.
The cafe also encouraged people to “Stand up” and “Speak out.”
However, people began calling her business saying terrible things and giving the cafe one-star reviews on Google and Yelp.
When neighbors and her church heard about what was happening, they showed up in droves to support the cafe, with people waiting in line for up to 45 minutes to buy a drink.
Video footage recorded at the cafe’s location in Carlsbad showed people standing in line as they waited to put in an order.
“We’re so thankful to be supporting them and for them taking a stand. It just shows when you take a stand, people will come and support you,” one woman told Breaking Battlegrounds:
“We were flooded with righteous people just showing up, supporting us, defending us. They were defending Charlie. Obviously, we all were,” De Luca said, adding that no one with hateful intent came to her business.
She said even people from other states called to send money and buy drinks for locals.
One person on X encouraged people to “skip Starbucks and support Invita Café” amid attacks on the business:
“God is so behind all of this,” De Luca said. “This is insane. But I think Charlie would have been proud.”
A businessman in Georgia who owns a local Steak N’ Shake honored Kirk with a billboard and received a lot of praise for his brave memorial. Even the restaurant chain’s owner took notice and reportedly asked if they could take his idea and spread it across the nation, according to Breitbart News.
Kirk’s assassination shocked the entire world with millions of people mourning his death. In addition, ministers have said they are seeing a faith revival in the wake of Kirk’s murder.
The day after Kirk was assassinated, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills Pastor Jack Hibbs, who was a close friend of the Turning Point USA founder, said, “I have had the honor of knowing Charlie Kirk well and personally for many years now. I cannot express how incredibly proud I have been of his faithful Christian witness and the way he has honored the Lord Jesus Christ with his life.”
“Charlie was known as an intellectual giant, a very compassionate young man, and one who was tirelessly devoted to this nation’s welfare and our glorious republic. I am humbled and blessed to have played a small role in Charlie’s discipleship, and I know nothing was more important to Charlie than knowing Jesus Christ,” he stated.
