President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s determination to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, assuring Ghanaians that he has no personal or political interest in the menace.
Speaking at a meeting with civil society organisations on Friday, October 3, the President dismissed suggestions that he or his administration benefit from illegal mining.
“We will continue to fight. I believe we will win the fight against galamsey. We have nothing to hide; I don’t gain anything from galamsey. I’m not personally involved in galamsey. I have no interest in galamsey continuing,” Mahama said.
He stressed that the fight requires collective effort, assuring stakeholders of his government’s continued partnership.
“You can be sure that we’re all on the same side. And we will continue to do this together,” he added.
The President’s remarks come amid heightened calls from religious leaders, civil society, and communities for stronger action to halt the destruction caused by galamsey to the country’s water bodies, farmlands, and environment.
