The Corporation of Madurai has said admissions to the schools run by the civic body have almost doubled this year on Vijayadasami day on Thursday, considered to be auspicious for initiation of children into education.
Education Department officials of the Corporation said on Friday that Vijayadasami day witnessed a long stream of students joining their schools. The Corporation has 64 primary, middle and high schools in its umbrella.
On the auspicious day this year, the number of children admitted to LKG was 78, UKG 22, and Classes I to VIII 21, while 65 students were admitted to Corporation schools on the occasion last year, the officials said.
They said that apart from the regular curricula, the students were taught German language. They also gave special attention to children who were differently-abled. For those who were interested in sports activities, they were provided free gym facility with coach among others.
The senior school students (tenth and plus two) were given coaching in NEET, competitive exams and in ITI like fields. As a part of the extra-curricular activities, the children were given exposure to music, folk arts, drawing, et al in the schools.
While the infrastructural facilities had vastly improved with Smart Class Rooms and IT-related gadgets, the officials attributed free breakfast scheme launched by the Tamil Nadu government to the rise in admissions to the pre-KG classes.
“The children were given quality breakfast and after the parents were convinced, they have started enrolling their wards in our schools….” a senior official said.
Recently, the Corporation passed resolutions seeking the approval of the council at its meeting held on September 25 for procuring books (All in One) for the kindergarten students for about ₹2.50 lakh. The children would be given free set of uniforms, notebooks, food and other essential items which the council approved.
